We look forward to welcoming you to John Smeaton International Symposium on Innovations in Civil Engineering (JSISICE-300) which will take place on Wednesday 4 September 2024 in the Scott Suite, located in Edinburgh Business School (EBS) at Heriot-Watt University’s in Edinburgh Campus.

This one-day symposium is being held to celebrate 300th birth anniversary of John Smeaton and commemorate his pioneering contribution to the advancement of Civil Engineering in the UK and worldwide.

John Smeaton is regarded as the ‘father‘ of civil engineering. He was responsible for designing and constructing bridges, lighthouses, land drainage, river navigations, canals and harbors. The majority of which remain in service today.

Topics covered include recent developments in the analysis, design, construction, monitoring, maintenance, and rehabilitation of different types of infrastructure (e.g. bridges, tunnels, coastal and offshore structures, railways, dams, canals etc) that dominate the built environment landscape.
